Meet the Private Client Team with James McMillan
What is your role in the private client team and how long have you been at Sintons?
Tell us about your career to date…
After graduating from Northumbria University in 2011 I trained and qualified in a high street practice dealing predominantly with private client matters. I had a particular interest in the wills, trusts and probate aspect of the work and moved to a larger regional firm in 2016 to pursue this. I worked across the Court of Protection and wills, trusts and probate teams. Over time as my practice grew I focused exclusively on the wills and probate element and qualified as a member of STEP (the Society of Trusts and Estates Practitioners) in 2018. I joined Sintons in 2019 to further specialise in this area with a particular emphasis on lifetime planning.
What attracted you to Sintons?
Sintons’ reputation in the private client field is exceptional, always ranking highly with legal directories such as the Legal 500 and Chambers, and their outstanding showing at the Northern Law Awards 2019 cemented this. I felt it would be a fantastic opportunity to be able to work with such a renowned private client team.
What does your role involve?
I provide comprehensive tailored advice to individuals, trustees, executors and attorneys. This includes providing advice in many aspects of private client work including the preparation of wills and lasting powers of attorney, providing tax planning advice, establishing and administering trusts and the administration of both simple and complex estates.
What have been your personal highlights to date?
I have only been with Sintons for a little over a month but have been made to feel very welcome from the outset and am enjoying the opportunity to work in such friendly and highly regarded private client team.
The private client team is one of the most highly rated in the North of England. What are the advantages of being part of it?
The team is a lovely one to be a part of with friendly people and an excellent working dynamic. There is a lot of expertise within the team at all levels and it is headed up by an outstanding lawyer in Paul Nickalls who is always happy to support with anything you may need.
How does Sintons differ from other firms you have worked in?
In all honesty I have been very fortunate in the firms I have worked for in the past. Sintons, though, strikes a brilliant balance between being friendly and supportive but still progressive and well structured. It is forward thinking and proactive in terms of firm strategy and the legal marketplace in general. There is a clear emphasis on client service excellence and systems and structures are in place to support and maintain the implementation of this.
What are your interests outside of work?
Currently I am undertaking my final year of study to become a Notary Public, I also like going to the gym. Between these I don’t have that much free time at present but when I do I like to spend time with friends and family. I also enjoy travel and try to get away whenever possible.
