Slips & Trips at Work Compensation Claims

Slips, trips and falls at work are some of the most common causes of injury and subsequent absence.

According to the Health & Safety Executive the majority of trips are caused by obstructions in walkways rather than uneven surfaces. As a consequence it is important that a workplace is well designed to ensure that there are clearly marked walkways and that there is an efficient system of housekeeping in place to avoid obstructions developing. All employees should be trained to appreciate the risks arising from such obstructions.

The Health & Safety Executive have also developed a hazard-spotting checklist to help employers reduce the likelihood of slips and trips.

Common causes of slipping accidents at work include wet floors arising from cleaning operations or leaks and spillages which are left unattended. It is important that all spillages are removed as quickly as possible and that in the meantime the area is clearly marked to warn people of the danger.

Floors and walkways should be cleaned outside of normal working hours where possible. Where this cannot be done an effective system of warnings and cordons should be used to prevent access to floors and walkways until the area is completely dry. Where no alternative routes can be used to avoid a walkway or floor, the area should be cordoned off and cleaned in sections so that there is always a dry area which can be used. Machines and equipment should be regularly inspected to ensure that there is no leakage which could subsequently cause a slipping accident.

Should you suffer personal injury as a result of a slip or trip at work it may be possible to recover compensation for the pain and suffering you have experienced and any losses and expenses incurred.
