MEK Poisoning Compensation Claims

MEK (Methyl ethyl keytone) is a colourless highly flammable liquid which is used in paints and other coatings. It is also used in industry as a solvent and in the synthetic rubber and petrochemical industries. MEK is also commonly used in the manufacture of plastics and textiles and can be found in printing inks and in household products such as lacquer, varnishes and paint remover.

That said, products containing MEK are generally not considered a significant risk to health. Workers in the industries that use or produce MEK may be at risk however and excessive exposure can cause personal injury.

MEK can enter the body through fumes which are inhaled or by the ingestion of contaminated food or water. It can also pass through the skin.

Excessive exposure to MEK can affect the nervous system causing headaches, dizziness, fatigue, loss of co-ordination, nausea and vomiting. It can also irritate the eyes, nose, throat and skin and on some occasions may lead to unconsciousness.

It is thought that serious or permanent damage to the nervous system is rare although it is believed that significant inhalation can cause lung damage. It is also believed that when MEK is used in conjunction with other chemicals it can increase the neurotoxic effects of exposure, increasing the risk of injury.

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) employers must take reasonable steps to prevent exposure to hazardous substances including MEK. As a consequence should you be diagnosed as suffering from MEK poisoning it may be possible to pursue a claim for personal injury compensation.
