Legionellosis is a collective term for a number of conditions caused by exposure to the Legionella bacteria. The most serious of these conditions is Legionnaires Disease, whilst similar but less serious conditions are known as Pontiac Fever and Lochgoilhead Fever.
Legionnaires Disease is a form of pneumonia and is potentially fatal.
The bacteria responsible for Legionnaires Disease are commonly found in natural water sources but usually in low numbers where they do not represent a significant risk. The bacteria however is also found in purpose built water systems such as cooling towers, air conditioning units and spa pools. In these systems water is often maintained at a temperature which encourages the growth of the bacteria and which can lead to sufficiently increased numbers. This in turn can cause illness. Exposure normally occurs by inhaling small droplets of water which are suspended in the air and which contain the increased levels of bacteria.
The risk of developing Legionnaires Disease increases with age. Other people at increased risk include
- Smokers and heavy drinkers;
- Individuals suffering from chronic respiratory or kidney disease, diabetes, lung and heart disease;
- Anyone with an impaired immune system.
The symptoms of Legionnaires Disease are similar to those of flu including high temperature, fevers and chills, cough, muscle pains and headaches. The condition often leads on to pneumonia and occasionally diarrhoea and signs of mental confusion. Treatment is by way of antibiotics.
In the event that you have been diagnosed as suffering from Legionnaires Disease it may be possible to pursue a claim for personal injury compensation. In order to do so, it will be necessary to identify the party responsible for your exposure to the Legionella bacteria. This will usually be caused by a lack of maintenance or adequate monitoring of purpose built water systems.
