Office of the Public Guardian


The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is a government body in England and Wales that, within the framework of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 protects the private assets and supervises the financial affairs of people who lack mental capacity to make decisions. The OPG is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Justice.

The OPG is responsible for taking action where there are concerns about an attorney or deputy, registering lasting and enduring powers of attorney, maintaining a register of deputies and attorneys, supervising deputies appointed by the court of protection and investigating reports of abuse against registered attorneys and deputies.
