Chronic pain

Diagnoses in individuals presenting with chronic pain type symptoms are often contentious and/or complex, and may include one or more of the following:

  • complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS);
  • fibromyalgia; or
  • psychiatric illness – such as somatic symptom disorder.

Investigation of such claims is often difficult, , but in these claims effective claim management can make a significant difference to the overall outlay. There is often an involvement of multiple disciplines of medical evidence (including psychiatry, rheumatology and pain experts), and frequently surveillance evidence is obtained.

We recognise the importance of prompt disposal of claims; frequently prolonged litigation is a poor prognostic indicator in such cases and early compromise of claims can limit an insurer’s total exposure.
