The Trainee's View “Sintons has a reputation in the North East as being one of the most highly regarded firms. As a trainee you are treated well and very much expected to perform from day one – a combination I was very comfortable with! The firm has always felt that the way it treats both clients and its own staff as individuals is one of its great strengths. After my first week, I could see why they were proud of this reputation.
Joining one of the leading midsized firms in the very attractive and thriving city of Newcastle upon Tyne was a definite advantage. During my time here I have worked with several clients ranging from local entrepreneurs to high profile businesses in the region and a number of national organisations. It's always exciting to see deals I have worked on ending up in the local newspaper!
Sintons carries out a wide range of work including commercial, property, private client and personal injury, so there are opportunities to experience many different areas of the law. Although the training contract is broken up into four distinct seats in different practice areas, each area remains diverse within itself. For example, my commercial litigation seat incorporated work in employment law, licensing, debt recovery, civil and property litigation. Next, after finding my feet in personal injury litigation, I was seeing my own clients and handling my own files in no time. Although daunting, my training partner and other colleagues were always available for advice and support.
I gained experience in a variety of fields, rather than being restricted to studying only one strand. This kept my daily workload varied and challenging and also opened my mind to potential specialisms for the future. I don't think I could have made such an educated request for my qualifying seat had I not been able to experience as much as I did.
The firm has a straightforward, friendly and relaxed feel and I immediately felt as if I was among friends. There is a distinct lack of hierarchy and virtually no egos around – something that seems quite rare compared to the experiences of some of my friends from law school. There's a welcome social side to Sintons which is important as the work is busy and the pressure can mount at times! There is often something to celebrate over a drink or a sporting or social event to take part in. The work/life balance is definitely a bonus here. The iconic modern office – The Cube - in the heart of the city provides an excellent working space.
I can't imagine that many other firms allow trainees the first hand experience that I've had at Sintons. All of the trainees have been right in the thick of deals and disputes, meeting their own clients and taking cases forward. It is very rewarding at the end of a matter to think that you've played a key role in its success. Especially when clients take you for dinner to express their gratitude!
I see Sintons as a forward thinking firm with a positive vision for the future. All trainees and young solicitors are looked upon as partners for the future and it is encouraging that Sintons invest their time in training us with a view to taking the firm forward. I certainly feel I have a lot ahead of me to look forward to.”
